Network Marketing is like farming

Manitoba - Rey and I have been married 30 years. We are grain farmers in southern Manitoba, Canada. We love to spend time with our 3 wonderful kids: Chad (about to be married to Kelsey), Derek and Janessa. We love travelling, boating, cycling, camping, and taking cruises.

We owned a trucking company for 13 years. I've been a bank teller for 10 years.

In 2004 and 2005 we had a crop failure. It had been too wet to even put seed in the ground. No seed, no harvest. In the winters of 2004 and 2005, Rey went long distance trucking to pay the bills. I needed to make extra money, but didn't want to work the 9-5. I wanted to work flexible hours, be home with the kids, attend their activities, take holidays when we wanted, and be available on the farm.

I saw a newspaper ad: "Make $5000.00/month returning phone calls." I love talking on the phone. $5000.00 a month was great. Sounded easy. That is the day my network marketing began.

But guess what? It wasn't that easy. Network Marketing is like farming. You have to seed before you harvest. It takes time for that seed to grow. But with cultivation, care, rain, and sunshine there will be a harvest.

I joined several companies, spent a lot of money on leads and advertising. I had downloaded the ebook "Success in 10 Steps", in March 2006, but never read it. I struggled for a year. I didn't know how to train people who joined me. I didn't know how to mentor, motivate or lead a team.

I read the Mentoring For Free website. I didn't believe Michael Dlouhy would really mentor me, that he would teach me and my downline to do this business. In March 2007, I finally read "Success in 10 Steps", and went on my first conference call. It clicked. I knew I had found a mentor and a proven, duplicatable system, step-by-step instructions that anyone can do.

I learned how to evaluate a company, how to be a critical thinker, how to generate my own leads for free, how to call leads, how and where to advertise, personal development, how to identify my prospects by personality.

Best of all, Mentoring for Free is a network marketing family, a safe place where people open up and share their struggles & their past, with no judgment from anyone. When I joined, I didn't believe in myself. When Michael said he'd believe in me until I believed in myself, it gave me hope that I could be successful.

To have the harvest I want in MLM, I needed to get the weeds out of my mind. That negataivity and low self-esteen had to go. I learned to paint new pictures in my mind, of who I want to be, and what success looks like to me. Now I speak my future into reality. It takes focus and persistence and faith. You have to believe it before you can see it. I know that if you plant corn, you will harvest corn. And if you plant good seeds in your mind by reading good books and getting together with like-minded positive people, then you will reap a great harvest.

Network Marketing is not about the money - it's about people. Build people and then the people will build the business. Even if we would never make any money in this businesses, we're growing and becoming the people we were meant to be, and we're helping others grow into leaders.

We Couldn't Duplicate

Wisconsin - Julie and I were married in college. For seven years we lived broke and happy while we finished our undergraduate and then graduate programs. I entered the corporate world, where the money was good and the work was fast-paced.

Over time, though, I noticed two trends. First, the stress and time commitment grew faster than the salary. Worse, I started to see hard-working productive people down-sized when they were too young to retire, but old enough so it was tough to find new employment.

The Time Was Right

Then an old friend moved near where I was working. We had dinner, and he told me about a network marketing company with some impressive technology.

For the first 15 years of marriage, Julie and I avoided network marketing. We had watched family members who had joined a well-known MLM company. They were taught to live beyond their means (fake it 'til you make it), use deceitful recruiting practices, and shun anyone who didn't join their business. After three years of hard work, all they had to show for it was massive debt.

As my friend talked about this company, my natural inclination would have been to blow it off. But the combination of job stress and concern had me open to an alternative. I joined the company on the spot.

We Couldn't Duplicate

Julie and I started building our business. With significant time, travel, expense, and brute force, we started sponsoring people and making a check. But we quickly hit a wall. The people we sponsored could not duplicate our results. We were left with a largely inactive organization.

After we became completely burned out, we joined a different company, more geared towards building on the phone and internet. We made some progress, but it wasn't until we joined Mentoring for Free and learned the skills needed to build a business that our organization really took off.

It's About the System

The reason for the growth in our organization was simple and obvious. We finally had a turn-key SYSTEM that we could teach others to use to grow THEIR organizations. For the first time, the growth of our organization wasn't about us. It was about the SYSTEM.

This is truly significant. Mentoring for Free allows us and others on our team to build our business without having to change who we are. The system is flexible. Anyone can use it and tailor it to their strengths. This is what made network marketing a truly enjoyable experience, rather than drudgery. I have my strengths. Julie has hers. We were married in 1994. Network marketing has been a big part of our lives since then. We have endured losses and thrilled in our success. Success is a lot more fun.

Some time back, we joined a financial education company. How ironic ... the financial education company went belly-up due to poor management. (If we had known then what we know now, life would have been far different.) We built to the top level ever reached in this company and helped one of our frontline leaders build to the same level. Life was great! We lived in our dream home in a gated community on 640 acres. We had deer and turkey in our back yard. We had horses, 4 wheelers and all the toys. We drove new vehicles paid for by our company.

We spent summers on the lake on our houseboat with a ski boat and SeaDoos. We built our business from the lake. We had finally reached our dreams, it was possible!

For 4 years we worked from home together. Life was great - together we would drop our son off at school, go to breakfast or workout, talk to people and just do what we needed/wanted to do on our terms. Best boss we ever had!

Then, our company went belly-up, leaving us high and dry. We lost it all...ALL! We were devastated.

Mentoring For Free was then presented to us and everything changed. Reading SUCCESS IN 10 STEPS changed our outlook, our thinking, and our lives! We had hope - we were given directions on how to do mlm right! We learned how to read our mlm contract and how to understand our policies and procedures.

We Did Everything Wrong

Minnesota - When we first started in MLM we did everything wrong, trying to build our business. We went for the 100 No's. We chased family and friends ... away. We purchased leads, then purchased better leads, and then purchased the best leads. Over $8,000.00 later, we had little to show for it. Today, we are not making a dime on any of those leads, not even the really good ones. None of it worked.

Can you make money in MLM with leads? Sure. Here's the secret; build a downline, and send them all your affiliate link to buy leads. Tell them they MUST buy leads to be successful. A lot of them will believe you, and you'll make a pretty nice affiliate income from that. Of course, your downline will lose money, because leads do not work.

We understand now why people do this. They don't have a system that works, and they hope leads will work. So the easiest solution is for you to buy leads - which pay them a commission. And if that doesn't work, it must be your fault.

A few years ago, we had success in conventional brick and mortar businesses. It took a ton of hours and hard work to keep it going and growing. When we found Network Marketing, it looked easy. Just find a couple like-minded people, then sit back and collect the checks.

WOW! We quickly learned how wrong that was. We knew there had to be a way to make MLM work, so we went looking for answers.

Most people wonder what Mentoring for Free is all about when they first find it. We were certainly part of the "what's the catch?" group.

Michael Believed In Me Until I Could Believe In Myself

I grew up in South America -- Brazil and Argentina, and witnessed the haves and the have-nots of deplorable poverty. I Want my children to see this. I Want gratitude and God to be present in our lives each and every day, and I want the freedom to travel and see the world with my family at the drop of a hat.

2001 was the worst year of our lives. I lost my father in May. Bill lost his favorite Aunt in July. In August, we rushed Bill to the hospital for major surgery. He was away from the office for 6 weeks. September brought 911. November brought our third child, who spent his first two weeks in Intensive Care.

I shut down my ad agency when my largest account closed their US operations. We went from a two-income family down to one. I refused to have daycares raise our children, so I stayed home and depleted our retirement. We lost tremendous amounts of money that year in our office supply company and took forever to dig ourselves out. Yet we persevered with the help of family and friends.

In May of '06 I was working very hard in MLM, but I was racking up thousands of dollars in credit card debt, and getting very little back. I was struggling to build my Network Marketing Business, approaching people in coffee shops and parks trying to convince them that what they REALLY wanted was to make millions working under me in my MLM company. I cringed inside every time I approached someone. As a matter of fact, Bill and I had done Network Marketing a total of 4 times over a 20 year period and failed each and every time. My self-esteem had taken a beating and I struggled to stay positive, organized and calm for my family.

Then Mentoring for Free came into our lives.

I had many personal struggles to overcome and Michael Dlouhy helped me. He mentored me and helped me grow into the person I am today. He taught me the importance of eliminating the negatives from my life. The news, which is almost ALWAYS negative, the radio and negative people, were impacting my view of life in ways of which I was totally unaware. He taught me the importance of studying books for personal development.
